Swanky Scrunchie

Scrunchie – Whenever I’m chillen in my sweats, there is a 99.9% chance my hair is in a scrunchie. It’s the epitome of hang-time, the grungiest of grunge looks, and the cloudy with a chance of never leaving bed kind of spirit. Swankyadj. 1. A person or object that is posh, high-class, glamorous, classy, upmarket, etc. Paired side-by-side I consider this the godfather of oxymorons; quite frankly it is the paradigm that runs not only my life, but also my fashion style.

Did you hear about the party in my pants? Well, unfortunately that’s invite only, however the party ON my pants is a free for all. Everyone can enjoy spring’s hottest trend, patterned pants. The array of patterns ranges from floral to stripes and can be paired with a plethora of jackets. I love the juxtaposition of the outfit on the far left, the white motorcycle jacket and the silk snake pants are my ideal version of ying and yang. To style these fancy pants I like to choose a top that picks up a color in the pants pattern, but completely contrasts their style. The best part about these pantalones is that they can be dressed up for work or a night out or toned down with a simple T-shirt or tank for something more casual.

Fiesta

I’m jetting off to Mexico in just a few days so I decided to spice it up a bit by adding hair and nail tips. Usually I’m boring and my manicures are routine; I get the same color every time. But hey, if I’m going on spring break my nails should get a little fiesta action as well. Go big or go home, I chose to go big with blue. Each nail is a different shade, fading from darkest to lightest. Hop on the ombre trend and try it yourself at home! Nothing is worse than straightening your hair with humidity levels higher than the Empire State building. In weather like this nix the iron and let your hair go au naturel.  Next, add some Pocahontas braids and you have yourself sexy seductress beach hair. My inspiration was the first picture I posted, however I altered it a bit and made my own version. It’s quite simple if you know how to French braid. I French braided horizontally, and when picking up the next strand of hair, I dropped some along the way, causing a cascading effect. Sorry in advance for the lack of posing this upcoming week, unfortunately I will be reading a book on the beach in Puerto Vallarta (ha-ha).

Ahoy

(Shirt: Alexander Wang, Jeans: Gap, Flats: Sam Edelman, Bag: Balenciaga, Necklace: from Croatia)

Captain Jack Sparrow coming to you live from the living room! Well not literally, but this oversized striped grunge tee reminds me of the notorious pirate. Usually I pair this shirt with leggings and boots for class. However, gray-washed jeans, piano flats, and a statement necklace use their magical powers and take this tee to the next level; it’s the perfect ensemble for a night of drinks with the gals. The ultimate sartorial swank this season is pattern mixing, hence the stripes and leopard. I am trying my best to think of some clever way to relate leopard to pirates, but it’s just not happening. Pardon my creative juice today, and stay toooned for more posts. That’s allllll folks.

Scrambled

(Shrug: Alice&Olivia, Tank: SUNNER for Saks Fifth Avenue, Skirt: Zara, Knee-Highs: Urban Outfitters, Booties: Pour la Victoire)

I never thought that clothes could be thrown into the same category as eggs, however the first word that came to mind when making this outfit was scrambled. I love the colors of this corset top; they’re so vibrant and fun! It is the perfect top to wear with those bright colored jeans that are trending right now. However, I opted for a more neutral bottom, a beige leather skirt, leaving the bright colors for my upper half. I cannot quite put my finger on it, but something about knee-highs gets me.  Paired with heels they add some swankanista points to anyone’s style. I take my outfits like I take my eggs, well done ;)

Furry Flurry

(Jeans: Rag&Bone, T-Shirt: Rebel Yell, Vest: Zara, Necklace: H&M, Bracelets: Chan Luu and Hermes, Shoes: Jeffery Campbell, Gold Ring:H&M, Turquoise Ring: hippie store on State Street)

Nothing keeps you warm on a frigid February day like a furry companion. Fortunately, I have two! My cuddly canine’s name is Zoey; trust me she can get her swank on. At a whooping seven inches tall (on hind legs) Zoey is the perfect winter accessory. Numero dos is this fabulously fluffy faux fur vest, and YES that was no type-o it’s faux. To the Zara on the glamorous Passeig de Gracia en Barcelona I give thanks for this truly amazing article of clothing. Paired with my wide leg Rag and Bone elephant flare jeans and my rocker tee this outfit screams hello Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in Almost Famous, umm obviously?!) Going along with the hippie theme I opted to stack my wrists with bracelets and bring on the ring bling.

Puss in Boots

(Boots: Catarina Martins, Skirt: Elizabeth and James, Top: Forever 21, Bag: Botkier)

While Puss and Boots may be animated, his combat kickers make a fashionable statement off screen. This getup reminds me of Puss and Boots gone Ace Ventura, the edgy boots can be attributed to the brazen feline while the collar and Hawaiian-esk pattern remind me of the crazed animal detective. Asymmetrical skirts that are shorter in the front are big right now; it’s the perfect way to show off your shoes. Sorry Pixar, the crossbones and skulls make the boots PG-13, but they are definitely a hit at the box office; I cannot take them off. This outfit somehow makes a feminine bohemian skirt mix well with a structured conservative top and some badass boots.

Black-Out

(Tank: Patterson J. Kincaid, Pants: Aqua for Bloomingdale's, Vest: Kenna-T from Nordstroms, Shoes: Steve Madden, Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, Necklace: Stones&Stitches by Stacey)

White-out: probably the best invention since Post-Its; black-out: a perpetual state of obliteration and memory loss from excessive alcohol. A pun indeed, black-out when constructing an outfit constitutes of one thing only, all black-err-thing. It's no coincidence black is the color of choice for the Wicked Witch of the West; the dark hue is quite literally magical. Hips too wide?  Shoulders too broad? Black is the human eraser; it’s the ultimate slimming tool. That being said you can’t just throw on black sweats and a T and declare it fashionably forward, there’s a technique to this trick. Recipe: one suave layday, ingredients: different patterns, textures, shapes, and fabrics, mix 'em all up and you’ve got yourself a hot piece of cake. My favorite part of wearing all black is accessorizing with colorful jewelry, bags and shoes; it’s like a blank canvas waiting to be painted on with vibrant accessories.

Pumps and Pinot Noir

(Sweater: Vintage, Blouse: Joie, Pants: Theory, Pumps: Brian Atwood, Headband: made by me (literally))

Move over Moulin Rouge because Matted Rouge lips are in and Christina Aguilera is SO out. What’s hot? Opaque lips, think a few glasses of Pinot Noir mixed with Eric Northman’s canines after drinking Sookie Stackhouse’s blood (True Blood fans out there, you feel me?), enough with the pop culture references and onto my outfit. My mother gave me this sweater from the 80’s; she’s held on to some great pieces through the years, firmly believing “everything comes back in style at some point.” Well, kudos to her because it is definitely the statement piece of this outfit. Whenever I wear something bold I try to keep the rest of my outfit simple, hence the white blouse and black trousers. I must admit I adore side zippers on pants; it’s like a little peep hole for your pumps. I went through a phase a few summers ago when I was so obsessed with Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl that I made headbands inspired by her, this being one of my favorites. These pony hair black pumps are the perfect way to add texture to a rather bland outfit. Ever have those days when you try on 500 outfits and end up wearing all black? In that case I like to mix different textures to spice things up. In my opinion it doesn’t get more chic than pumps and Pinot!

Forever 21

(Blouse: Forever 21, Skirt: Forever 21, Shoes: Guiseppe Zanotti, Necklace: Forever 21)

21, it’s that age we've pretended to be since we were 17 years old (thank you shady smoke shop on Sullivan and Bleeker for those dapper fake Maine IDs), but when that life milestone is in the rearview mirror, suddenly you want to slam on the breaks. Enough with the sentimental talk I get it, but I find myself wanting to embrace the child within (and I do not meant literally). What’s more Crayola and Gymboree than color blocking? This spring, neons and bold colors are everywhere; brace yourselves because matching is out and clashing is in. Yellow top, blue skirt? Wish I had a neon pink blazer to throw over this getup and some swanky green shoes, but hey, I’ll settle for this. Saddle up, because while 22 is just ahead, I can only wish to freeze time and stay Forever 21.
